I used Random.org, so I didn't pick randomly. :-)
I have decided that I am going to have the best birthday EVER for my 24th birthday on October 9th!!! I already have everything I could ever need, so this is a perfect time for me to give back. For my birthday, I (and the family members I have recruited) will be performing 24 Random of Kindness around Charleston, South Carolina.
I first saw the idea over at Mix, Mingle, Glow when she did the same thing for her 38th birthday and our engagement photographer, Erin Hession (if you need a photographer in Indiana... she's your girl), did it for her 30th birthday. Go check out their birthday adventures, too!
Imagine how AWESOME the world we be if everyone performed just one random act of kindness a day. I will be posting
to my twitter account (@KatyRAOKS) every time we perform a RAOK. At the end of the day I will post everything
to this blog.
I hope that you will join with me on October 9th and perform at least one Random Act of Kindness!

RAOK 3: GLEE GIVEAWAY!
10.10.2010
RAOK #1: Left a treat for our mailman!
Our mail person is quite elusive. I couldn't even begin to tell you whether it is a male or female that delivers our mail every Monday-Saturday. I know the time frame they drop it off, but in the 5 months that we have lived in Charleston I have never seen them. I left a little note thanking them for delivering our mail and a bag of Twizzlers. When we got home after finishing the day, I opened the mailbox to find this:
RAOK #2: Dropped off muffins at our fire departments

Clay and I live in the middle of nowhere on an island. We actually have 3 fire departments within a five mile radius of our house. Our neighborhood's two entrances have one within half a mile of them. We don't know who would respond if something actually happened to our house, but we figured both of them could use some muffins. We dropped off some banana nut and wildberry muffins to both. All the guys seemed really excited to have breakfast delivered.
One of the departments actually just got this brand new truck. They tried to get me to get on it, but I convinced them a picture in front of it would suffice.
RAOK #3: Glee Giveaway
RAOK #4: Dog treats at the dog park
We loaded up all the dogs and headed to the dog park for our next adventure. I had pre-made a bunch of baggies with dog treats to hand out to owners. This was the first time our dogs had been to the dog park, so we were kind of nervous about taking them. All four of them (my aunt's dog came to visit this weekend) had a blast. All the dog owner's seemed really happy about getting the treats, too.
One of the treat bags went to a high school teacher that works at a high school in North Charleston. She wants me to come talk to her class about my birthday. :-) Fun.
RAOK #5: Sweet treats for the neighbors
I left some sweet treats on our neighbors' door steps. We also had a guy in the neighborhood that found our keys we had left on top of the car a few months ago (oops), so we left a plate of treats for him, too!
The day after my birthday adventure (on Sunday 10/10/10), Clay found these on our front step. :-) Our neighbor's across the street had left me some Brazilian cookies (that were delicious) and a birthday card. I love our neighbors.
RAOK #6: Laundry Mat Drop-Off
I dropped off a bottle of detergent and a box of dryer sheets to a random laundry mat along the route. I just walked in and put it on a shelf above the washers and walked out. I know how often I forgot to bring my detergent with me when I was in college and had to go all the way back to my apartment. I hope I saved someone a trip to their car or house.
RAOK #7 & 8: Banana pudding and recipe drop off
Clay is one of the managers for the West Marine in Mt. Pleasant, SC. (For all your boating needs he will be more than happy to help you out. :-D) About a month ago I made the staff some banana pudding and they have been begging me to make it again. I made it one of our stops.
Linda asked for the recipe a few weeks ago. I've been slowly perfecting it, so I wanted to make sure it was perfect before I gave it to her. I gave it to her at the same time. You can see her checking it out at the register. :-)
We also had a little bit of fun while we were at the store.
RAOK #9: Water Bottles on The Bridge
The Cooper River Bridge (aka The Arthur Ravenel Bridge) is a popular spot for walkers, runners, and bikers. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people are on it daily. I figured it would be a good spot to hand out water to people who were on it around lunch time.
We took 48 bottles of water and, with the exception of the one my aunt snagged, we handed them out. It was actually harder to give out water than I thought it would be. People wanted to know what the catch was. A lot of people were just surprised that I was out there to just to give out water. I even had one lady stop to give me a hug and wish me a happy birthday.
RAOK #10: Cookies for the ER Vet
The week we moved down to Charleston, Mayfield got into something (we think she ate a frog) and got really sick. Dogs never get sick during normal working hours, so we had to take her to the emergency vet. They took great care of her, so we dropped off some cookies for them to enjoy. Luckily, the parking lot was empty and there wasn't anyone in the waiting room when we stopped in. :-)
RAOK #11: Free Lunch + Great Tip
RAOK #12: Donation to Charleston Animal Society
All three of our dogs are rescues, so rescue organizations have always had a special place in our hearts. We donated 74 pounds of dog food and a box of treats to the Charleston Animal Society. AND as a bonus Random Act of Kindness for Clay... I did not adopt another dog. :-) I did try to surrender my little cousin, though.
RAOK #13: DONATED TO GOODWILL
RAOK #14: FLOWERS TO A NURSING HOME
We took a few flower arrangements to a nursing home in Mt. Pleasant. They placed them on the nurse's stations so that all the residents could enjoy them.
RAOK #15: TOYS FOR LOWCOUNTRY OPRHAN RELIEF
RAOK #16: HID A GIFTCARD IN A POSTSECRET BOOK
I hid a $5 giftcard in a PostSecret book in Barnes & Noble. PostSecret is one of the coolest movements I have ever been exposed to. I have been checking them faithfully every Sunday since I discovered them Freshman year at Clemson. It is truly life changing and I wanted to help someone by one of those books.
RAOK #17: DIAPER CHANGING STATION
Target was our next stop. I had a RAOK to complete and we all wanted an ICEE. :-)
I've heard that being a parent can be expensive (not ready to try that out... yet), so I took some diaper coupons that I had cut out the past few Sundays and a $5 giftcard from Target and wrapped it up all pretty. I folded down the diaper changing station, took a picture, and folded it back up. I hope it was a good surprise for a Mama. :-)
RAOK #18: QUARTERS AT A CAR WASH
RAOK #19: PARKING ATTENDANT PICK-UP
I had a few things to do at MUSC (the Medical University of South Carolina), so we headed to the nearest parking garage. I figured the parking attendant could probably use a snack, so I brought her a little baggie with water and snacks.
RAOK #20: FOR THE KIDS
RAOK #21: FOR AN ICU FAMILY
The Summer before my Junior year of high school, my grandfather underwent major heart surgery. There was a great deal of complication and he would up being in ICU for the majority of the summer. He eventually got better, but then 4 days before our wedding he suffered another heart attack and was back in the hospital. I spent a lot of time in ICU waiting during both periods of time and found that puzzle books and snacks kept me distracted. I wanted to give someone else a "distraction" of sorts while they waited anxiously to hear something from a doctor.
